What happened to Steven Turner is, by now, fairly well known—especially following his recent Guernsey Press debut.

But what you might not know is that Steven may have saved someone’s life.

When, on Tuesday afternoon, Steven was moving towards his bus, he noticed an elderly lady struggling to get on. She was having trouble with her knees. Also noticing that help wasn’t forthcoming, Steven helped her up. After thanking him, a conversation about seizures began, for no reason other than the lady suffers from epilepsy. As it turned out, Steven also suffers from seizures. This was, one might say, a coincidence.

Bidding the lady goodbye at his stop and thinking no more of it, Steven walked up the road. The rest we know, for this is when Steven ran into the police.

What you don’t know is what occurred later.

Unsure of the time, perhaps 2 ‘o’ clock on Wednesday morning, Steven was sat in the passenger seat of a police car. The driver, a nice policeman hailing from New Zealand, was taking Steven home. Suddenly, Steven spies a tiny pair of shoes at the end of a driveway, pointing up, like a possum playing dead. “Stop!” he shouts, making the driver jump.

Thinking the trauma of earlier was affecting Steven’s better judgement, the officer doesn’t halt. But Steven is very insistent. He begs, now almost in tears, for him to stop the car.

The driver looks at Steven, eyeing him nervously, and pulls up on the curb. Maybe to prove to Steven he was still suffering the effects of a concussion—in any case it would be nigh on impossible to notice a pair of shoes in the dark—or maybe because Steven seems so sure, so absolutely certain, that he starts to believe him. He backs the car up. And, to both Steven’s and the officer’s utter amazement, laying on her back in a driveway, is the lady from the bus. Covered in mud, unconscious and alone. No one knows how long she had been there. An urgent call was made. The lady got the necessary help before Steven was eventually dropped home.

This was, one might say, a stranger coincidence. Had Steven not had his own brush with misfortune that day, he may never have crossed paths with the woman again. Had Steven not spotted her, this story could have ended badly.

Every cloud, as they say, has its silver lining.
